Nothing is quite as good as the aroma coming from real vanilla pods. For this reason, several of my recipes use Vanilla Sugar as an ingredient to give it that special vanilla flavour. It is very easy to make your own Vanilla Sugar in large quantities. It is not only fun to make it yourself, but it is also a lot cheaper than buying Vanilla Sugar in stores. If you have any dietary restrictions, always check the labels on the products you are using to make this recipe with. They will tell you if, for instance, your ingredient might contain traces of nuts, your products are made with dairy or if there is a chance the ingredients have come into contact with gluten-containing food or equipment.

- 100 g Granulated Sugar - As much as will fit into your jar.

Other things you need
- Food Processor - This is optional.
- Cutting Board
- Cutting Knife
- Fill a jar with granulated sugar.
- Optional: Cut open fresh vanilla pods and remove the seeds. [How? Check out my article and video tutorial!]
- Optional: Mix the seeds in with the sugar.
- Cut your used vanilla pods into pieces. [Several smaller pieces instead of one big piece, allow for a better distribution of the vanilla flavour in your sugar.]
- Stick your used vanilla pod pieces into the sugar and close the jar.
- Let the vanilla beans sit in the sugar for at least two weeks. Over time, the vanilla flavour will end up in your sugar.
- Enjoy your Vanilla Sugar!
Good to know
- Important: Replenish the granulated sugar after you take out some vanilla sugar. Mix the new granulated sugar and vanilla sugar so the vanilla flavour can be absorbed by the added granulated sugar.
- Storing: Make sure to store your sugar in an airtight container or jar and keep it in a cool, dry and dark spot.
- Shelf life: Vanilla sugar, like granulated sugar, will stay good for years if stored correctly.
- Optional: Depending on the size of the sugar grains, you can briefly put the granulated sugar in a food processor to make the grains smaller, before adding them to your jar.
- Optional: When you use vanilla pods regularly, you can choose to put dried, used pods, into your food processor and add the ground vanilla pods to your vanilla sugar. This will not just increase the vanilla flavour of your sugar but it also creates a great, aesthetic effect, characteristic for vanilla flavoured products.
- Organic: Only use organic ingredients.
Nutritional Information per Portion
Know What You Eat
Both when buying food or when making your own, it is important to inform yourself about the nutritional value. Have a look at the nutrition label, learn about your serving size and what nutrients this product will bring to the table.
If you want to compare different products and their values, it is easier to look at a label where the values are given per 100 grams. This way you get a better understanding of the categories certain products belong to when it comes to nutritional values. Is this a product with a high sugar content? Does it contain a lot of fibre? How does this product measure up if I am looking to stick to a low-sodium diet?
Keep in mind that if you are looking to eat healthily, you should not just avoid eating fat and/or sugar. We need both in our daily diet. Make sure however to be aware of where you get your lipids and sugars from. As a rule of thumb, you could say; variation is very important in your diet and in general, the closer your food is to come straight from the source, the better.
